You’ll sit together with your counselor and discuss your concerns and your goals for your relationship.
You’ll explore emotions, process past hurts, and learn how to talk about hard things without it turning into a fight.
You’ll work on relationship skills together in session, and you may even get homework to do at home.
When both partners are working together, and each is changing how they are showing up in the relationship, then you will start to see changes in the relationship. It can be a slow process, depending on the severity of the situation and the capacity of each partner.

Couples where there is an active, untreated addiction or mental illness are not good candidates for marriage therapy. If there is an ongoing affair with no intent to stop, marriage therapy is not a good fit.
If there is domestic violence happening in the relationship, couples counseling will not help. If you are experiencing violence or abuse in your relationship, please call the domestic abuse hotline: 800-799-7223 or text BEGIN to 88788 for a confidential assessment.
These relationship dynamics are contraindicated because relationships are built on a foundation of trust. Without it, there is little that can be done for the relationship.
If you are experiencing any of these things, you can book an individual counseling session to help you navigate these challenging dynamics.

The answer to that question depends on many factors. Any couple willing to do the work of repair can build a better relationship.
Not all relationships can or should be fixed. Sometimes the damage is great enough that there just isn’t enough good will left to make the changes necessary.
-
This is a challenging situation. One of the cardinal rules of relationships is that you can only control you. If your partner is truly “done”, you are left with the decision of what comes next.
If your partner won’t join you in couples counseling, you can come on your own to get clarity over what the best next step will be for you. Individual therapy can help you navigate the big feelings that you’re experiencing in the relationship.
If you have children, couples counseling can help you navigate coparenting and managing the divorce process with your children.

Even when things are “not that bad”, you can really do some good work to make your relationship better. Many couples use counseling as a check-in to keep the relationship strong.
Waiting until things get “bad” will mean that the path back will be much harder. Waiting too long may result in the relationship being unrepairable.
